Porter Excavations clients generally wish to deal with us because of an expectation that in doing so they will "get what they want". When services must be provided by Porters then services are done well and on time. When products must be provided by Porters then those products allow the customer to complete services well and on time. Put simply "customer satisfaction" is of the highest priority.

In attempting to understand how the company may provide such high levels of customer satisfaction several things must be remembered about the Porter Excavations structure and background:

  • Knowledge Excellence
    Founders Tim and Norm Porter were actually a part of the industry which they now sell to for many years, working with, buying and hiring equipment. The result allowed them to understand the dangers to their business of down time and items of plant unable to deliver the required result.
  • Performance Excellence
    Much of the business generated by the company is on contract, which in itself demands a high level of performance. That level of performance is the basis of all Porter Excavations service rendered. The internally nurtured and developed services made necessary by the Quality Management System and a variety of other business factors mean that the levels of service soar to significantly higher levels.
    The work ethic of Porter Excavations is to maintain "new or near new" vehicles and equipment in order to maintain customer productivity as well as the companies own and to ensure the highest level of profile in the community due to the best quality equipment being on display at all times.
  • Service Excellence
    The company has a rule that requires creating a relationship with the customer, talking to and virtually working along side him to ensure his needs are served. The company does not conduct customer surveys as such, but by employing "Project Managers" whose task it is to visit client offices on a regular basis to discuss problems, note additional plant requirements and advise of new Porter developments ... perhaps a survey is being conducted without the paperwork and certainly any required changes are noted and put into place. Discussions with regional managers regarding service and the performance levels of equipment allow Project Managers to draw conclusions as to the standard levels and to monitor those levels accordingly.

The result is that the team at Porter Excavations knows their customers, their needs, their time requirements and their cost restrictions. The constant consultation with these people by management means that at no time does a problem or a request remain unanswered.

The "competitive edge" enjoyed by Porter Plant certainly stems from the level of service provided as discussed above. The edge stems most definitely from concentrating less on providing the cheapest product in the market for users to enjoy ( but displaying a high level of cost to customers due to breakdown) and more on providing the best product in the market place ensuring customers of maintained productivity.
